The VET Program in Certificate II in Heavy and Light Rail Fundamentals provides students with basic knowledge and a realistic preview of the heavy (train) and light (tram) rail industry in Victoria. Students are taught in a combination of structured learning, self directed learning and hands on training in a simulated work environment.
Recognition within the VCE and VCE VM
This course will provide credit at VCE units 1 and 2 level only. Each completed 90 nominal hours of training provides one VCE unit of credit.
This course will not contribute to the ATAR.
Program Content
The Certificate II in Heavy and Light Rail Fundamentals consists of 10 units of competency (UOCs) completed over two years.
Year 1 units
- Provide First Aid
- Investigate Rail System Fundamentals for Victoria
- Apply Safety Awareness in a rail environment
- Examine heavy and light rail fundamentals for Victoria
- Examine rolling stock fundamentals in Victoria
Year 2 units
- Complete a basic heavy or light rail industry project
- Prepare for employment in the rail industry
- Explore applications and operation of the internet of Things (IoT)
- Examine heavy and light rail network operations in Victoria
- Provide service to internal and external heavy and light rail customers
Additional Information
Entry Requirements: Students wishing to study a VET course will need to complete the relevant application form (in addition to completing subject selections). To be considered for a VET course, students are expected to have sound skills in the areas of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and literacy. Students also need to demonstrate a mature approach and commitment to their studies and learning.
Fees: Indicative fees for Certificate III in Heavy and Light Rail Fundamentals are $800.00 (per year of study) *VET fees are subject to change.
