The VCE VET program in Building & Construction Pre-apprenticeship – Carpentry aims to provide learners with basic industry specific skills and knowledge to enable transition into an apprenticeship within the building and construction industries at the Certificate III level. This pre-apprenticeship course consists of a core of common cross sector units of competency that provide skills and knowledge in applying basic levelling procedures, carrying out basic measurements and calculations, communicating in the workplace, erecting and safely using working platforms, interpreting basic plans and drawings, preparing and applying for work in the construction industry, working effectively and sustainably in the construction industry and workplace safety practices onsite. The course also includes a range of units that introduce the learner to the application of specific materials, tools and equipment, and techniques used in specific trade sectors that underpin the Certificate III qualifications in the Carpentry trade sectors.
Recognition with the VCE and VCE VM.
This course contributes towards VCE and VCE VM.
The VCE VET Building and Construction program does not offer scored assessment. A student who achieves a Units 3 and 4 sequence may be eligible for an increment towards their ATAR. Increments for a VCE VET Program Non-Scored Units 3 and 4 sequence will be calculated using 10% of the fourth study score of the primary four.
Program Content
The Certificate II in Building and Construction consists of a minimum 20 units of competency (UOCs) – completed over two years.
UOCs may include:
- Work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry
- Conduct workplace communication
- Carry out measurements and calculations
- Apply basic leveling procedures
- Apply OHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry
- Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
- Provide basic emergency life support
- Prepare for work in the building and construction industry
- Interpret and apply basic plans and drawings
- Erect and safely use working platforms
- Identify and handle carpentry tools and equipment
- Perform basic setting out
- Construct basic sub-floor
- Construct basic wall frames
- Construct a basic roof frame
- Install basic external cladding
- Install basic window and door frames
- Install interior fixings
- Carry out basic demolition of timber structures
- Construct basic formwork for concreting
Additional Information
* Partial Completion – The full certificate cannot be delivered in the time allocated for VET subjects, this decision is made with the approval of the VCAA and will not have any impact on the program credit to the 1&2 and 3&4 sequence – Training providers will offer bridging courses for those students who would like to complete the qualification post school.
Entry Requirements: Students wishing to study a VET course will need to complete the relevant application form (in addition to completing subject selections). To be considered for a VET course, students are expected to have sound skills in the areas of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and literacy. Students also need to demonstrate a mature approach and commitment to their studies and learning.
Fees: Indicative fees for Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) are $800.00 (per year of study) *VET fees are subject to change.

Personal Protective Equipment and Tools: Students require additional equipment for this course. The equipment is used over the duration of the course and will be beneficial to students proceeding to further study in the building and construction industry/an apprenticeship. The equipment list will be provided to students allocated a position prior to commencement.
Students will require clear safety glasses and hearing protection.

Where minimum class numbers are not attained and a course does not commence, students may be able to apply at an alternate training provider offering the course. Training Providers may prioritise positions based on applicant year level.

The program on site at St Joseph’s College Geelong is delivered at the Joseph Innovation Trade Training Centre by Victoria University Polytechnic (RTO 3113).
