The VCE VET Program in Furniture Making is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to enhance their employment prospects in the furnishing, cabinet making and related industries.
Students will undertake multiple practical projects throughout the course that will develop the basic skills and knowledge of the furniture making industry. These skills could be applied to a range of trades/industries including cabinet making, carpentry, framing, upholstery and furniture restoration to name a few. Through hands on learning, students will learn how to safety use a range of hand and power tools.
Students will have the opportunity to produce several high quality pieces throughout the duration of the course, including a jewellery box/storage container, hardwood bar stool, a modern occasional chair and bench seat as well as a range of handmade timber joints.
Recognition within the VCE and VCE VM
This course contributes towards VCE and VCE VM. Scored assessment is available for Certificate II in Furniture Making Pathways. Scored assessment is based on the Scored Units 3 and 4 sequence of VCE VET Furnishing. (based on the units 3 and 4 sequence).
Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for the VCE VET Furnishing program Units 3 and 4 sequence must undertake scored assessment for the purpose of achieving a study score. This consists of three coursework tasks, worth 66% of the overall study score, and an end-of-year examination which is worth 34% of the overall study score.
This study score can contribute directly to the ATAR, either as one of the student’s best four studies (the primary four) or as a fifth or sixth study increment.
Where a student elects not to receive a study score no contribution to the ATAR will be available.
Program Content
The Certificate II in Furniture Making Pathways consists of a minimum 12 units of competency (UOCs) completed over two years.
UOCs may include:
Unit 1 and 2
- Develop a career plan for the furnishing industry
- Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices
- Demonstrate care and apply safe practices at work
- Select and apply hardware
- Prepare surfaces
- Apply domestic surface coatings
- Join materials used in furnishing
- Make simple timber joints
Unit 3 and 4
- Use furniture making sector hand and power tools
- Assemble furnishing components
- Undertake a basic furniture making project
- Make measurements and calculations
Additional Information
Entry Requirements: Students wishing to study a VET course will need to complete the relevant application form (in addition to completing subject selections). To be considered for a VET course, students are expected to have sound skills in the areas of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and literacy. Students also need to demonstrate a mature approach and commitment to their studies and learning.
Fees: Indicative fees for Certificate II in Furniture Making Pathways are $800.00 plus materials (per year of study) *VET fees are subject to change.
Class Delivery: Classes may be delivered outside of standard School hours.
Personal Protective Equipment: Students will require clear safety glasses, ear plugs and dust mask.
Uniform Expectations: Please refer to the VET Trade Uniform information (located in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) section).
Tools: Students will require 1 x 8m Tape Measure and 1 x 1m Beveled Edge Folding Rule
* VET Courses are subject to minimum and maximum student applications and therefore places and course commencement cannot be guaranteed. Where minimum class numbers are not attained and a course does not commence, students may be able to apply at an alternate training provider offering the course. Training Providers may prioritise positions based on applicant year level.
Students are encouraged to consider and prepare alternate subject or VET preferences.

Auspicing enables school staff to deliver and assess VET programs overseen by the RTO. Through their vocational management system, AST are responsible for accreditation of the VET delivery and awarding of certificates/ statements of attainment. AST provide support throughout the delivery with onsite visits and review of documentation to ensure a quality assured program is provided. |
