The VCE VET Program in Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship) aims to provide learners with basic industry specific skills and knowledge to enable transition into an apprenticeship or traineeship within the plumbing industry at the Certificate III level. This pre-apprenticeship course consists of 19 compulsory units of competency that provide skills and knowledge in workplace safety practices onsite, workplace communication, carrying out measurements and calculations, reading and producing technical drawings, applying basic sheet metal practices, using various welding equipment, and using plumbing tools and resources.

This course contributes towards VCE and VCE VM.

The VCE VET Plumbing program does not offer scored assessment. Increments for a VCE VET Program Non-Scored Units 3 and 4 sequence will be calculated using 10% of the fourth study score of the primary four.

Program Content

The Certificate II in Plumbing (pre-Apprenticeship) consists of a minimum 19 units of competency completed over two years.

UOCs may include:

  • Work safely in the construction industry
  • Carry out interactive workplace communication
  • Write simple documents
  • Carry out measurements and calculations
  • Read and interpret plans and specifications
  • Apply OHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry
  • Produce technical drawings
  • Provide basic emergency life support
  • Apply basic sheet metal practices
  • Cut and penetrate building materials and structures
  • Fabricate simple plumbing pipe systems
  • Identify career pathways in the plumbing industry
  • Perform basic oxy-acetylene welding and cutting
  • Prepare to work in the plumbing industry
  • Use and apply basic levelling equipment for plumbing
  • Use basic electric welding equipment and techniques
  • Use basic plumbing hand tools
  • Use basic power tools
  • Use plumbing pipes, fittings and fixtures to simulate plumbing installations
Additional Information

* CompletionThe full certificate cannot be delivered in the time allocated for VET subjects, this decision is made with the approval of the VCAA and will not have any impact on the program credit to the 1&2 and 3&4 sequenceTraining providers will offer bridging courses for those students who would like to complete the qualification post school.

Entry Requirements: Students wishing to study a VET course will need to complete the relevant application form (in addition to completing subject selections). To be considered for a VET course, students are expected to have sound skills in the areas of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and literacy. Students also need to demonstrate a mature approach and commitment to their studies and learning.

Fees: Indicative fees for Certificate II in Plumbing are $800.00 (per year of study) *VET fees are subject to change.

Class Delivery: Classes may be delivered outside of standard School hours.

Delivery at The Gordon
Year One Delivery Wednesday PM (1:30pm – 5:30pm) Where there is a strong demand / a high volume of applications, The Gordon may also offer Wednesday AM (9:00am – 1:00pm)
*If students are unable to accommodate a specific session time (e.g. your bus does not arrive in time for an AM session, you are unable to arrange travel directly to SJC or The Gordon or you have external commitments), please notify the VET Coordinator. *times may be subject to change.
Year Two DeliveryMonday – 1:30pm – 5:30pm *times may be subject to change
TransportAM (If required) – Transport will be provided both to and from The Gordon (East Campus).
TO: Departing SJC at 8:40am and 
FROM: Departing The Gordon at approximately 1:10pm, returning to SJC at 1:25pm (approx).
PM – Transport provided to VET (departing SJC at approximately 12:40pm). Students to make own travel arrangements home at end of session.

Personal Protective Equipment, resources and tools: This program requires the purchase of additional items which remain the property of the student. These items are used over the duration of the course and will be beneficial to students proceeding to further study in the industry/an apprenticeship. The equipment list will be provided to students allocated a position prior to commencement.

* VET Courses are subject to minimum and maximum student applications and therefore places and course commencement cannot be guaranteed. Where minimum class numbers are not attained and a course does not commence, students may be able to apply at an alternate training provider offering the course.  Training Providers may prioritise positions based on applicant year level.

Students are encouraged to consider and prepare alternate subject or VET preferences.
